दही-हांडी (DAHI-HANDI)

Gokul-ashtami or more popularly known as DAHI-HANDI in Pune and Mumbai is celebrated in India to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar.  ( reference Wikipedia)

The Dahi-Handi is celebrated to display the mischevious nature of  Lord Krishna. The story goes as follows. In his younger days Lord Krishna was very fond of butter and use to love eating it alot. Once he and his friends ate away all the butter in the house, so his mom hanged the pot of butter on the ceiling wall. To get the butter Lord Krishna and his friends formed a human pyramid and broke open the pot. And from that day onwards it is widely celebrated as DAHI-HANDI especially in Pune and Mumbai.

The festival has taken the form of a championship in which different teams participate to break the pot by forming human pyramid to win the cash prize.
